Istanbul Technical University TOMER and the ITU Natural Language Processing Group participated in the "Turkish in the Digital Age Symposium," hosted by Karamanoğlu Mehmetbey University on May 13-14, 2026, presenting remarkable papers on the digitalization process of the Turkish language and language technologies. The event addressed the use of artificial intelligence tools across a wide spectrum, ranging from teaching Turkish to the analysis of historical texts.
Within the scope of the event, Lecturer Abdullah Esen, Head of the ITU Turkish Language Department and Vice Director of ITU TÖMER, and Lecturer Dr. İnci Pamuk, Vice Head of the ITU Turkish Language Department, both of whom are also active instructors teaching at ITU TOMER, delivered enlightening presentations: Lecturer Abdullah Esen evaluated the use of generative artificial intelligence in the measurement and assessment processes of writing skills in teaching Turkish as a foreign language. Esen shared with the participants the advantages and innovative methods that the integration of these new-generation technologies into language education will provide. Lecturer Dr. İnci Pamuk, on the other hand, touched upon the challenges encountered in the analysis of historical texts and presented her study on the critical role that AI tools play in determining context-based word meanings.
Another significant academic contribution to the symposium came from the ITU Natural Language Processing Group, one of ITU TOMER's strong internal stakeholders. Research Assistant Fatih Bektaş, a member of the ITU NLP Group, took the stage with his paper emphasizing the creation of data strategies and the need for standardization in this field to safeguard the future of Turkish in a digitalizing world. Bektaş's presentation demonstrated the strategic importance of creating Turkish datasets.
The participation of ITU TOMER and the ITU NLP Group in the symposium reinforced inter-institutional academic collaboration, while once again bringing their innovative vision in the fields of Turkish language teaching, linguistics, and digital language technologies to the scientific community.
